How to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair in 5 Minutes

Heading out for a big occasion with your regular halo of frizz? Not. If you want to tame frizzy hair quickly, there are a few things you can try. View our list and choose the method that’s most convenient for you. But first, it can help to understand why hair gets frizzy in the first place.

Why Does Hair Get Frizzy?

what is hair frizz?

Frizzy hair is hair that’s standing up looking for moisture. So it’s usually dry. But in order to stick up and out, it’s also usually lightweight, fine hair that’s thinner in diameter than the more coarse variety. So frizzy hair is normal in textures that are fine and dry. Now that we understand that, we can see how to get rid of frizz.

Curly hair can be dry, which means it also is a good host for frizz. If you need a quick fix for curly hair, try using a leave-in conditioner after washing, and plopping your hair. What is hair plopping? It’s using a t-shirt or microfiber towel to wrap your hair and allow it to absorb the moisture. This method, unlike using a cotton fiber towel, doesn’t cause friction between the strands or dry the hair excessively.

How to plop? While your hair is dripping wet, apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream. Then turn your head upside down. With the t-shirt near the tips of your hair, slowly bring the t-shirt up to your head, allowing your curls to accordion up.

Wrap the t-shirt or microfiber towel around your head and allow it to absorb the remaining moisture for a few minutes. Then release the towel or t-shirt and allow your hair to air dry. Don’t touch it meanwhile! The result will be frizz-free curls.

Try applying a leave-in conditioner and then braiding your hair before you dry it. You can either air dry or move a blow dryer up and down the length of the braid to dry it. When it’s completely dry, release the braid.

You’ll have a beautiful, frizz-free style. If your hair is already dry and you need to calm frizz, add a few drops of hair oil to your hands. Flip your head upside down and smooth your hands down the length of your hair. This can add shine and volume and lay down the fuzz without weighing your hair down.

The halo of hair appearing on top of your head is because of humidity. Because your hair is always going to be drier than in a humid atmosphere, frizz can present a constant problem. How to tame frizz in humid weather?

Apply a silicone-based product before blow drying or air drying your hair. That takes less than two minutes! The silicone acts as a barrier that doesn’t allow extra moisture to affect your hair. The downside to silicones is that they can be tough to remove completely without a clarifying or sulfate shampoo.

Blow drying can damage the hair. If you’re blow-drying, use a leave-in conditioner to keep the hair soft and a silicone-based product to protect your hair from the heat. This only takes a few extra minutes added to your routine, but take your time while drying.

When you dry your hair too quickly, it gets frizzy and tangled. Move the dryer around constantly to avoid overheating any part of your hair. After you’re finished, add a few drops of nourishing hair oil to keep frizz at bay.

How to Tame Frizz and Flyaways

Flyaway hairs are like frizz because they also stand up. Flyaways can happen to any texture of hair, whether it’s fine or coarse. They happen because of the charge produced between the hairs when you use a shampoo that’s not pH balanced.

If your shampoo is alkaline, or if it doesn’t state that it’s pH balanced, make sure to use a conditioner on the lengths of your hair. This will remove the negative charge that causes flyaways. To use a conditioner only takes an extra five minutes of your time.

If your hair is already dry and flyaways develop, try using a little hairspray and pat them down. It’s best to use alcohol-free hairspray because alcohol can cause swelling of the cuticles and make hair frizzier.

There are a few other things you can do that may take over five minutes. If frizz is a daily problem for you, try incorporating a few of these other frizzy hair tips:

  1. Pre-poo: Try leaving in a blend of coconut oil and castor oil to nourish your hair before shampooing. Both will give your hair softness and an amazing shine and help prevent dryness. This is the best way to rid yourself of fuzzy hair in the long term.
  2. Co-wash: Washing your hair every day or every other day is a sure-fire recipe for fuzzy hair. If you need to wash more than once a week, try co-washing in between. Conditioner surfactants cleanse your hair gently and coat the hair to prevent frizz.
  3. Conditioner: Even if your roots are oily, always use conditioner on the bottom length of your hair. It helps seal the cuticles of your hair strands, so that moisture doesn’t escape, leaving your strands standing up looking for hydration.
  4. Less heat styling: Heat styling might make your hair smooth initially, but in the long term, it causes more dryness. Dryness means frizz.
  5. Regular trims: Getting your hair cut regularly helps you get rid of frizzy split ends.
  6. Silk pillowcase: Sleeping with a silk pillowcase keeps hair smooth and frizz-free whereas sleeping on cotton roughs up your hair cuticles and causes frizz.
  7. Cool water: Washing your hair with hot water raises the hair cuticles. When the cuticles are raised, moisture escapes, causing frizz.

Getting rid of frizz is mostly a matter of changing a few bad habits. When you’re able to hydrate your hair and lock in the moisture, frizz can be a thing of the past.
